Linly Heflin and the scholarship process

Visit Linly Heflin's new website.

The Linly Heflin Unit was formed during World War I from a group of women who rolled bandages for the Red Cross. When that need ended, the women stayed together with a desire to give service to the community.

That commitment started in 1920, when the group endowed a ward at Children’s Hospital. In 1923, the Unit awarded scholarships to the University of Montevallo and the State Institute of the Blind in Talladega and decided to make its major project the education of young women in Alabama.

Since that time, the Linly Heflin Unit has awarded more than 2,700 scholarships totaling over $2 million. Eligibility is determined based on financial need, the quality of the individual, and her proven record of achievement.

Although many of the recipients are high school seniors, women of all ages are eligible and encouraged to apply. Recent applicants have included women returning to school once their children were older, single mothers anxious for education to increase their earning power, and women going back to school after working to save for their education.

More than 200 applications are received each year for approximately 25 scholarships, which are renewable for four years. In 2004, the scholarship program was supporting 93 women in 15 colleges and universities in Alabama, including two at UAB Medical School.

If you are interested in applying, contact the Linly Heflin Unit’s office at the following address and phone number or, if you are a high school senior, talk with your guidance counselor.  For more information call the number below and leave a message.  A volunteer will return your call.

Linly Heflin now has a website with information about applications.  www.linleyheflin.org
