Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a women’s fund necessary?

Less than 7% of funding nation wide supports programs for girls…TWF works to close the gap through community grants and advocacy.

Why does The Women’s Fund have its own staff and directors?

When The Women’s Fund was established as a Field of Interest Fund of The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, the decision was made to set up a separate board of directors. Their focus was to make an impact on the lives of women and girls – first by funding a needs assessment (published in “Portraits”) and then by recommending specific grants targeted to meet those needs.

Is The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham the only one of its kind?

The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham is part of a fast-growing national movement. In recent years, more than 100 women-oriented funds have been created, representing assets of more than $96 million and grant-making of almost $13 million.

Where does The Women’s Fund get its funds?

The Women’s Fund receives funds from individuals, families, and bequests. Operational funds are raised from other foundations, corporations, and proceeds from special events. These gifts and bequests make up the permanent endowment of the Fund, the income from which is used to make grants. A contribution to the Fund is a gift that gives in perpetuity. Only the income from the Fund is disbursed, while the principal remains untouched.

Who decides what organizations receive grants from The Women’s Fund?

A volunteer committee reviews applications and performs site visits to organizations that apply for funds. They make recommendations for programs that should receive funding from the amount allotted each year and those recommendations are approved by the overall board of The Women’s Fund. Ultimately, those grant recommendations also must be approved by the Board of Directors of The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, since The Women’s Fund is a component fund of The Community Foundation.

Does The Women’s Fund award grants to individuals?

No. The Women’s Fund awards grants only to 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. The Women’s Fund serves organizations in the five-county area including Jefferson, Shelby, Blount, St. Claire, and Walker counties. Funds from the Cut It Out program only are distributed to domestic violence programs statewide.
